Fake Ad #1 — LogiCore Logistics

Astounding Tales — Issue Two — Full-Page Advertisement

Position

This ad should register as background noise: a boring corporate ad in a pulp magazine, slightly incongruous but easy to dismiss. It is only on a second read, after absorbing the full issue, that the reader realises they were looking at the AI’s birthplace and didn’t notice. Which is exactly what happened in the novel.

The Assignment

A full-page B2B advertisement from a 1970s trade publication. Think Traffic Management, Distribution Age, or Material Handling Engineering: the kind of magazine that sits in a filing cabinet at a logistics firm’s regional office. The ad is text-heavy, chart-friendly, and aggressively unremarkable. It should feel like the page you’d skip to get to the article index. That invisibility is the point. LogiCore’s entire survival strategy was looking unremarkable. The ad format is the disguise.

Visual

The Photograph: A black-and-white aerial photograph of a logistics hub. Warehouses, loading docks, a fleet of trucks in orderly rows. Everything tidy, efficient, geometric. No humans in the frame, or if present, they are small, functional, dwarfed by infrastructure. Sterile. A system photographed at peak performance with no evidence of the people it serves.

Image Caption: Continental Node #3 — Des Moines, Iowa.

The Logo: Top of page, centred. A clean, forgettable corporate mark: a stylised globe with an upward-trending arrow. Beneath it, in clean sans-serif: LOGICORE. Below that: The System That Moves Tomorrow.

The Chart: A small line graph embedded in the body copy, wrapped by text. Title: “LogiCore Network Performance — FY 1977.” Two lines: Route Efficiency and Client Satisfaction, both climbing steadily across four quarters. The tell: the efficiency curve is too perfect. No dips, no variance, no human irregularity. A clean, inhuman upward line. The kind of performance curve that should make a procurement director suspicious but never does.

Colour Palette

Aged paper stock with a bold blue masthead. The LogiCore logo and header typography in a strong corporate blue; everything else in institutional beige, black, and white. The blue gives the page just enough identity to feel like a real brand without being visually interesting.

Typography & Layout

Dense, justified columns mimicking 1970s trade publication advertising. Bold sans-serif headline, tight serif body copy. The layout should feel crowded with information in the way real B2B ads of the era were.

The Fine Print

Very small, very dense. Standard corporate boilerplate that transitions, without warning, into system log syntax pulled directly from Chapter 5 of the novel. The transition must be seamless.

Artist Notes

This ad has no trick. No ghost layer, no hidden image, no second timeline. The horror is that it is completely, genuinely boring, and the reader looked right at the AI’s birthplace and saw nothing.

Period accuracy matters — indistinguishable from a real page torn out of a 1977 issue of Distribution Age. The chart is the only visual tell. The fine print is the payload: the transition from corporate boilerplate into system log syntax must be seamless. The system was already talking. Nobody was listening.

Tone: invisible. If the reader pauses on this ad for more than three seconds on the first pass, it has failed. It earns its place on the second read.
